Our Collie named Timberlane and Her Babies!

When the kids were little and my mother had passed away and daddy was here at home by himself, my sister Marlene brought a small collie puppy to my dad and he was adamant he did not want it. So, she brought it up to our house and naturally our family fell in love with her. She reminded me of a collie walking down a lane of timber deep in the sun spackled woods, so we named her Timberlane. She chewed my new rocker leg and the teeth marks are still in it. She began to understand words and later when my dad passed away and we moved here to the 100 year old house she understood words like: "Timber...stay off the road, a car is coming!" She knew what you said. She was a small collie about as big as a fox and Timberlane was very mannerly and slower moving in her disposition although she could run when she wanted to. When she had her litter of puppies you did not see her for awhile just to come home and eat as we never tied Timby up and she was free to go and come as she pleased. Our son, Joey especially loved Timberlane and taught her many of the words she knew. When five weeks passed, here they would all come out of their den in the woods, all looking exactly like Timberlane and having manners as though they were raised by a queen. That is how she was. Very discreet. It was not hard to find homes for her puppies. One puppy was named Buttercup and we kept her. Buttercup was so lovable and never left Timberlane's side. She was at her right hip at all times no matter what. She grew up but never got old enough to have puppies of her own. One day when the tavern was open a friend of Joey's ran in to the bar and said, "Hey, Pam, I saw your dog in the woods!....She is shot...a hunter shot her!" Someone had shot our Buttercup through her heart. Sure enough, she was in the woods alone with a single shot, by whom we never found out. I know that Timberlane certainly had to miss her constant companion. We did!
